I love the generalist system as I both get to work with everyone across the firm and at the same time have exposure to a range of different sectors, process types, and sector-specific issues.
Beatrice interned with Gleacher Shacklock in the summer of 2018 and then went on to join the firm as an Analyst in 2019. Beatrice shares her thoughts about joining the team through the internship scheme and what it’s like to work in corporate finance.
Why did you decide on a career in Corporate Finance?
I decided on a career in advisory to gain a privileged and critical insight / view into some sectors and businesses that I like, to develop both ‘numerical’ and strategy-type skills when looking at those businesses, and ultimately be able to form views and opinions.
What aspect of your role do you enjoy most?
I love the generalist system as I both get to work with everyone across the firm and at the same time have exposure to a range of different sectors, process types, and sector-specific issues, which also makes it easier to make new interesting links and leverage and building on prior knowledge.
What does your typical day involve?
It is hard to describe a typical day as it’ll depend on what combination of projects I am staffed on, and some of those will be more active than others at different points of the week / month. Very generally, most days involve catching up with the respective teams on either progress being made on existing pieces of work, or on generating ideas, allocating and dividing tasks whenever a new workstream is required, and of course on progressing valuation pieces, other ad-hoc analyses, and specific client or marketing materials.
What advice would you give to someone considering the Internship Programme?
Try to keep a personal journal / list of mistakes you have found yourself doing once you are given feedback (also, ask often for feedback!), and that way you’ll start learning best practices; in much the same way, you could also ‘emulate’ how other analysts / associates manage, present, or approach their work (be it simply writing an email to a Partner / rest of the team or producing a key page on valuation summary).
