Callum first joined the firm as a summer intern in 2019 and then was offered a permanent position as an Analyst to start in 2020. Callum talks about his experience on the summer internship scheme and deciding on a career in corporate finance.
Why did you decide on a career in Corporate Finance?
I opted for a career in corporate finance as I considered it a unique opportunity to gain exposure to and participate in momentous financial and strategic events for client companies. Moreover, by working closely with experienced finance professionals and senior client management across a variety of businesses and sectors, I felt that a career in corporate finance would allow me to learn a tremendous amount about different firms and industries.
Why did you choose Gleacher Shacklock?
I chose to work as a Graduate Analyst at Gleacher Shacklock because of the firm’s open and flat culture, coupled with its generalist graduate programme. Through constant interactions with Partners and Directors across the firm, I can learn directly from some of the most experienced professionals in the industry. Furthermore, by working as a Generalist Graduate Analyst, I am able to gain exposure to a full suite of transactions, from M&A to restructuring projects. I felt this could enable me to learn about different companies and industries in the context of a greater variety of stimulating transactions and business circumstances.
What did you enjoy most about the Internship Programme?
From the start of the internship programme, I felt truly valued and part of the Gleacher Shacklock team, seeing first-hand my own ideas put into action in live projects. In addition, the firm’s staff carefully managed and crafted the Internship Programme to allow me to gain exposure to all the different types of exciting transactions that a Generalist Analyst can expect to work on.
Did anything surprise you about the Internship Programme?
On the internship programme I was always surprised by how much I was at the forefront of projects that I worked on. The high level of responsibility that I enjoyed on the programme, together with Gleacher Shacklock’s collaborative culture, propelled me to learn more about corporate finance.
Is there anything you wished you had known before you started the Internship Programme?
Irrespective of your background, you will formulate your own unique ideas on the projects that you work on during the Internship Programme. All of the professionals at Gleacher Shacklock take great pride in their work, and as such are always receptive to and value contributions from interns that can help bolster their advice to clients. I wish I had known just how much my ideas would be appreciated from day one and be never hesitant to contribute more, even early on!
What advice would you give to someone considering the Internship Programme?
