Can You Tell Us A Little Bit About Your Career And How You’ve Progressed At Gleacher Shacklock?
During my time at Bocconi University studying Economics, I completed a 7 month internship in an investment fund which was where I first decided to pursue a career in Investment Banking. After graduating, Gleacher Shacklock was then a natural choice given my interest in the corporate finance boutique world and the the firms impressive culture and expertise.
Why Did You Decide On A Career In Corporate Finance?
I consider Corporate Finance a unique chance to learn about different firms and markets, especially if you work as a generalist, as well an exciting environment with daily challenges and development opportunities. I think that very few industries offer the same variety and exposure. What especially appeals to me is the mix of both quantitative and qualitative aspects; when advising a client you do not only apply financial valuations, but you also think about the way to help the company at managerial level.
What Do You Enjoy About Working At Gleacher Shacklock?
One of the most striking qualities of Gleacher Shacklock is its flat structure with constant interaction between senior and junior staff. At analyst level this means having the chance to learn directly from some of the most experienced professionals in the industry from the very first day. Moreover, the firm’s culture encourages and promotes interaction between team members in addition to the adoption of a healthy life-work balance.
What Does Your Typical Day Involve?
No day is really like the other as it mostly depends on the project you are working on. Some projects involve in-depth research of firms or industries, whilst others require more modelling oriented solutions. Switching between different tasks means that you can develop a well-rounded, comprehensive skill-set and the opportunity to constantly feed your curiosity. Moreover, the generalist approach ensures you get exposure to different industries and learn how to think outside the box.
What Aspect Of Your Role Do You Enjoy Most And What Interesting Work Have You Been Involved In?
I have enjoyed the variety of projects that I have been exposed to as well as many opportunities to be involved in meetings with Partners and Directors. One of the projects that I worked on involved the pitching of possible targets for a well known investment fund in the industrial sector, a very exciting opportunity to learn about different firms and business models.
Are There Any Downsides To Working In Corporate Finance That You Wish You’d Been Better Prepared For?
I think everyone starting a career in Corporate Finance should be aware of the fact that this is a very demanding industry in terms of focus and working hours, but that, in return, you are given the chance to develop, build solid knowledge and create a network of talented, smart professionals.
