Whilst studying at UCL, Mehar completed an off-cycle internship at Gleacher Shacklock. After graduating, Mehar has now gone on to join the firm in a permanent Analyst position and has described his journey and experience in the company so far.
Can you tell us a little bit about your career and how you’ve progressed at Gleacher Shacklock?
I joined after graduating from university and have been moving at a non-stop pace ever since. I think the learning curve is a steep but rewarding one and I’ve learnt an incredible amount in my first year with the firm.
Why did you decide on a career in Corporate Finance?
I wanted a job where I could challenge myself and Corporate Finance undoubtedly provides that. It is also one of the few careers where you are continuously developing professionally and are constantly faced with new and unique tasks.
What do you enjoy about working at Gleacher Shacklock?
The relatively small number of employees at Gleacher Shacklock allows you to interact with everyone at the firm and the flat hierarchy allows you to learn directly from partners and senior bankers.
What does your typical day involve?
I don’t think there is a typical day for an investment banking analyst but assisting with valuation work, research and clear communication with other parties are typical responsibilities at my level.
What aspect of your role do you enjoy most and what interesting work have you been involved in?
Working on live transactions has proven to be very enjoyable, even more so when they are successful!
Are there any downsides to working in Corporate Finance that you wish you’d been better prepared for?
It may not be considered a downside to some but the long hours can prove testing at times. Thankfully, seeing the end result can make it worth it.
What advice would you give to someone considering your Internship Programme?
The more you put into this, the more you will get out of it; something which I think holds true far past the internship programme.
