Tom joined the business in 2008 and is a Director in the general corporate finance group. Tom shared his insights on what it's like to work at Gleacher Shacklock and his career in corporate finance.
What did you do before you joined Gleacher Shacklock?
I was an analyst in the M&A team at Deutsche Bank in London. Before that I studied Economics and Econometrics at the University of Nottingham.
Tell us about your current role at Gleacher Shacklock
I’m a Director in the general corporate finance group, which involves working on transactions across a range of sectors including Industrials, Services and Construction. I have worked with a number of the teams at Gleacher Shacklock during my time here and have been involved in M&A, equity capital markets and restructuring transactions.
Why did you decide on a career in Corporate Finance?
I have been interested in finance and corporate strategy for a long time. Corporate finance combined both these things and allows you to work with companies often at the most critical juncture in their development.
Why did you join Gleacher Shacklock?
At the time I joined, Gleacher Shacklock was one of the few established independent advisory firms in London. I was attracted to the independent model because I think it is the essence of corporate finance. Gleacher Shacklock attracted me as it combined this with a great client base and a set of partners with basically unparalleled banking experience.
What exciting work have you been involved in while you’ve been at the company?
We advised one of our FTSE 100 clients, GKN, on its acquisition of Fokker, the Dutch aerospace group. It was great to work with one of longest standing clients again to help them buy this iconic Dutch business. I also worked with a South African client (TFG) who acquired Phase Eight, the UK women’s fashion retailer. This involved two firsts for me – first time working in women’s fashion and first time working with a client from South Africa.
Why do you enjoy working at Gleacher Shacklock?
There’s lots of very interesting work - I think often clients come to us with their more difficult transactions! There’s a very collaborative culture (I suppose fostered by the partnership model) and a great team.
What do you think Gleacher Shacklock offers someone starting their career?
It’s a great educational environment with a major emphasis on learning and development which provides you with the opportunity to work on a wide range of transaction types (which broadens your corporate finance knowledge). On top of this, you will be front and centre of the projects you are working on, seeing them through to the end and not jumping from one thing to another. Gleacher Shacklock also offers exposure to lots of very experienced senior professionals who will expect you to contribute from day 1.
What advice would you give to someone joining your internship programme?
Be enthusiastic! It’s a great job if you are interested in learning new things and unlike a lot of other graduate roles it is one in which you are able to have very senior exposure early on in your career. The more you put in the more you will get out of it!
